Project Description
: EwingCole developed a strategic phasing master plan to transform Cooper University Hospital’s existing urban campus to accommodate South Jersey’s growing demand for medical services. The plan provided for future growth by coordinating the campus vision with the Hospital’s goals for revitalizing the surrounding area and increasing exposure of the Hospital as a leader in advanced care.
In addition to major renovations of existing facilities, EwingCole has designed a new eleven-story Roberts Pavilion, which is the centerpiece of the campus. The 370,000 sf, eleven-story pavilion includes a new two-story entrance lobby with a café and coffee shop and adjacent garden. The pavilion provides a new home for the hospital laboratory, 12 new operating rooms (plus four renovated) with specialty rooms for cardiology, neurology, and orthopedics. There is a 30-bed intensive care unit and two 30-bed medical/surgical nursing units built with all private rooms. One hundred twenty additional patient rooms will be constructed in a second phase that will provide additional intensive care, step-down and orthopedic beds. The dedicated orthopedic floor will also provide a rehabilitation gym and a family dining room.
Through our discovery process with Cooper, we had the opportunity to explore the relationship between the medical and lab staff. The primary goal of these pathology department renovations involves a fundamental shift in the role of pathology. It was revealed that pathology at Cooper was no longer just about statistics and that opportunity for greater interaction and review between lab and medical professionals would enhance patient treatment.
EwingCole evaluated, reprogrammed and collocated the hospital’s clinical and anatomic pathology departments to enhance Cooper’s desire to increase pathologists’ involvement in the patient treatment stream. The second phase will also provide 12 new cardiac cathangiography and EP labs, which will allow the heart institute to become a hospital within a hospital.
Completed in 2008, the new pavilion has greatly expanded Cooper’s highly specialized critical care and trauma services as well as more than doubled Cooper’s private patient rooms.
