Project Description
Doug Burdge of Burdge & Associates Architects recently completed a stunning renovation of a 6,345 square foot residence in Malibu, CA. The client, Brent Hocking – founder of the luxury liquor brand DeLeon Tequila (which sold to Sean ‘Puff Daddy’ Combs and Diageo in 2013) and current owner of Virginia Black Whiskey with Drake – wanted a home on par with Los Angeles’ hottest nightclubs, where he’s spent much of his time thanks to his thriving business. The home was planned in an all-black color scheme; polished black floors, black leather furniture, dark walls in every room and dark countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms.
The result was spectacular – even with the dark color scheme, the home is full of natural light and a sense of activity and life. Architectural aspects of the home were opened up, including walls both within the home and those that connect to the outside. The entire back wall of the living area opens up to the backyard, with bright green artificial grass, a sparkling blue pool and blue tennis court. Doug made sure that the skyline was visible when you walk in the front door, something not always possible in mountainous areas or single level residences.
