Project Description

Smile Studio is an addition to the historic Southside of Chattanooga which has become a wonderful conglomerate of locally owned businesses, entrepreneurs, artists, working studios, boutique shopping, and unique cuisine. In keeping with the goals and objectives of neighboring Main Street businesses, Smile Studio is the result of a modern, artistic vision made possible by collaboration between HK architects, the client Dr. Marie Farrar, and general contractor Mike Berry with Berry Construction.

The office includes one private treatment room, three treatment stations, a waiting area, reception, cleaning station, and mezzanine. The design style and directive of the space is one of minimal and modern tastes. Conceptually, the space was arranged in a way to maximize the dramatic verticality of the existing space and choreograph interesting volumes in a relatively small floor area. The project uses a full palette of materials ranging from Cherry wood and polished concrete to translucent resin panels and stainless steel.

From the beginning, Dr. Farrar expressed her strong desires to make the project an environmentally conscious and sustainable project using LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) as a guideline. This project will be the smallest project to receive a LEED certification in the city of Chattanooga. Totaling eight hundred and seventy-two square feet, Dr. Farrar’s orthodontist office was an unfinished space at the start of construction consisting of only exposed brick walls, drainage gravel, and exposed wood roof framing. With critical team efforts between client, architect and contractor, sustainable material selections and construction methods were used in fitting out the space with an environmentally conscious design.
