“The Beach House” is a grand, but cozy, oceanfront shingle-style home boasting a plethora of intricate, handmade details. She has already gained the reputation as being second to none in caliber, timeless design, and quality on our quaint Coastal Carolina island of Ocean Isle Beach. The objective was to nestle this home onto the small building envelope, while creating no negative environmental impact. In addition to embracing the Planning and Inspections Departments of the Town of Ocean Isle Beach, the Landscape Architect's knowledge of native dune plants ensured we took measures to plant and protect beyond the homesite. The homeowners’ decision to put copious amounts of tigerwood in “The Beach House” was not without apprehension. Understandably, they were nervous how it would react in such a damp, humid environment. Several challenges ensued. For an example, we install the hardwood raw and allow acclimation during construction. Finishing occurs at the end. We were all concerned how so much of an unpredictable material would react in such a moist environment for so long. So when sanding the floors began, we could see that something was wrong with the tongue and groove. Many minds met and much adrenaline flowed. In the end, thank goodness, we had simply dried the floors out too much. Such intense concern with mitigating humidity led us to swing the pendulum in the other direction. A couple of weeks of humidification, and all was good again. One special room is the library. The walls and coffered ceiling are mahogany; the richness brought out with six coats of tung oil. The library doors are mahogany and translucent sandblasted glass. This shingle-style home is saturated in handmade architectural details, millwork, and trim. The triple barrel vaulted ceiling that spans the main level and features Fine Art Lamps barrel shade chandeliers is the crown jewel. Every room has a different paneling, trim, and millwork detailing. The nautical ceiling details of the game room is reminiscent of an old wooden ship with 5' handmade corbels. Both master suites feature custom stained ceilings with handmade corbels and distinctive wall treatments. Faux painted grasscloth has more durability than the real thing on the Carolina Coast, and subtly beautifies one master suite. “The Beach House” was an extraordinary project. Blue Sky Building Company is a very small family owned company. Luke and Sandy Perisich are it's owners. We were awarded the construction of Julie and Alan's home, over our competition, because we listened to them. We gave Julie as much respect and attention as her husband. We had an eye for the details. We were open to new technologies and products. We were willing to build them the home they wanted, not the home we thought they should have. Like a masterpiece, “The Beach House” took many brushstrokes of countless talented people to come into existence. We hope that this home will be judged worthy of your recognition.
