Project Description
The clients purchased this home for its perfect blend and balance of Mediterranean and traditional styles. They sought to maintain the Mediterranean style so iconic to the Santa Barbara area, while modernizing elements of the home to better suit the needs for a young family. The ultimate objectives and scope of the project were to gut and remove all of the finishes throughout, reorganize the main interior spaces to create a better flow from the kitchen to the family room to create a great room space, and open the interior of the home up to new outdoor living space. The largest challenge faced was the new open floor plan concept that required a structural overhaul with old structural conditions. This area required new structural steel moment frames, steel posts and beams to hold up the top floor and the appropriate seismic lateral requirements. Careful and diligent management and close collaboration with the design team allowed for the transformation to be completed as smoothly as possible. Overall, the young family initially purchased the home as a secondary residence to be used for weekend trips or longer vacations, but have now chosen the home as their primary residence due to the incredible results of the project.
