Project Description
Creating a home of steel & glass around a central courtyard, while far from a seminal concept, was executed with a fresh focus to satisfy today's lifestyle and serve as both sanctuary and sophisticated entertaining environment. The choice was made early on to have the architecture be a warm natural color inside and out in order to have the building planes create a calm and sophisticated composition. As the home is nestled into the desert mountainside, the architect and the builder worked together to meticulously feather the mountain back to both stabilize the face and bring out the natural beauty of the hillside's colors, shadows, and shapes. The foyer sets the tone for the home, refined yet welcoming, connected to the outdoors, and inspired by the art collection. The warm character of the wood paneling is complemented by the glass walls. The living room's delicately assembled building components hold space open for nature to float through and be a quiet, well-scaled background for treasured pieces. The living and dining room combine with the kitchen to form a whole, sharing the morning sun over the east mountains, with access to the north terrace and courtyard. The polished but resolutely simple kitchen incorporates the functional design for the accessibility needs of the homeowners. The two tiered island features walnut and granite counter tops. The powder bath features a ceiling sensor mounted faucet and a hayes inc. custom designed laser cut onyx sink, which are reflected in the antique mirror. The floor-to-ceiling operable glass walls allow light to flow through the public spaces. The courtyard plays a central role in bringing the outdoors in, allowing filtered sunlight into the home. The family enjoys the sounds from the water feature along with the micro-climate created by the olive trees and lush vegetation. The master suite is positioned for privacy with views of the city lights and east mountains, while the adjacent building's volumes shade the expanse of glass. The master bathroom features matching granite vanities, Robern mirrors, and the hayes inc. designed sandblasted shower enclosure.
