Despite being one of Canada's largest institutions of its kind, York University’s School of Continuing Studies was previously scattered across multiple temporary locations on campus. This was a significant issue for its students, who primarily attend classes in the evenings and on weekends. To address this, the University identified the need for a dedicated building to establish the School’s identity, create a campus gateway, and meet ambitious sustainability goals.
The new building features a bold, twisting form derived from a simple geometric principle. By rotating rectangular floorplates around a central point, a two-way curve is created on the North and South facades. This rotation results in a triangulated panel pattern that utilizes regular and biaxial symmetry, allowing for repeated panel shapes on all facades.
Inside, program containers are set back from the triangulated exterior, creating adaptable classroom spaces. Informal gathering areas between these containers and the exterior foster a sense of community and belonging. Large glazed screens with custom frit control views and allow daylight to penetrate, enhancing occupant health and well-being. The ground floor’s full glazing establishes a visual connection between the campus exterior and the building’s interior, showcasing the School’s culture and promoting visible learning.
Central to the project are goals to reduce embodied carbon and enhance occupant health through intelligent resource use. The design, aiming for LEED Gold certification, supports a future campus-wide switch to renewable energy. Key strategies include an airtight prefabricated building envelope, direct outdoor air ventilation, and active chilled beams. These high-efficiency design strategies, combined with advanced HVAC and energy systems, significantly reduce energy loads, aiding the project in achieving its Net-Zero Energy target.
This innovative twisting design successfully meets the objectives of creating a distinctive home for the School of Continuing Studies, promoting energy efficiency, enhancing occupant well-being, and contributing to campus development.
