Project Description
ARCA Wynwood, leading global group in the stone, tile and wood industry, has announced the winners of its design challenge, “Balance as it Relates to the Environment,” naming Japanese architect Kengo Kuma & Associates or KKAA as first place.
Posing a challenge of creating a work of art displaying an environmental message using ARCA’s marble bricks, Kengo Kuma & Associates designed a structure based on defying the idea of stone as a heavy material with the fate of being part of even heavier elements. Stacking stone blocks as in a masonry wall system, the structure allowed space in between each piece offering a sense of permeability. The design intention was to create a structure that appeared as a light swaying presence.
“Our team at KKAA is honored to have been awarded first place for our creation,” says Javier Villar Ruiz of Kengo Kuma & Associates. “Our intention was to challenge the general understanding of the use of stone to create a thought-provoking sculpture that illustrates the versatility of natural materials.”
