The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) and the National Lighting Bureau (NLB) reported that the NEMA Lighting Systems Index posted another strong quarterly showing, growing 4.8 percent in a year-over-year comparison in the third quarter of 2015. The fixtures component of the index fueled the overall gains while the emergency lighting, ballast and lamp–large and miniature–components posted offsetting year-over-year declines.
Regarding specific lamp sectors, shipments for LED A-line lamps climbed 237.2 percent during the quarter on a year-over-year basis. Halogen A-line lamps also posted a year-over-year increase of 33 percent. Meanwhile, demand for incandescent A-line lamps and compact fluorescents lamps (CFL) decreased by 31.5 percent and 28 percent, respectively.
Demand for high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps declined in the third quarter, with significant decreases in shipments for sodium vapor lamps, mercury vapor lamps, and metal halide lamps.
The linear fluorescent lamp shipment indices for the third quarter continued to decline, a trend that began in 2014. The index for T12 lamps decreased for the seventh straight quarter, falling by 40.4 percent on a year-over-year basis. T8 and T5 shipments also continued to decline, dropping 10.9 and 10.6 percent, respectively.
