Wiel Arets will be the new dean at the Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture. Provost Alan Cramb announced the news yesterday.
The Dutch architect will assume a chair originally shaped by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who chaired IIT’s program from 1938 to 1958. Donna Robertson, FAIA, resigned in May as dean at the college, where she remains as faculty.
Arets, an architect and theorist whose practice is still active in Europe and Japan, comes to IIT from the Berlin University of the Arts, where he has taught building, planning, and design. Many of the best works of Wiel Arets Architects can be found in the Netherlands, including the Academy of Art & Architecture in Maastricht, the Euroborg Stadium in Groningen, and the Hedge House in Wijlre.
“The College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology has a global reputation and attracted outstanding candidates for dean from leading programs worldwide,” Cramb said in a release. “It is indicative of the position of the IIT College of Architecture that we have found such an accomplished architect to lead the school in a new direction.”
