Project Description

Priorities

  • Create an urban retreat in a 14-foot wide, 364-square-foot row house basement; include a kitchen, powder room, sitting area, and washer/dryer

Solutions

To deliver the complete agenda requested by the owner of this small apartment, the designers knew they needed to create a clean, minimal design.

Light bamboo flooring and white cabinets help give the space an airy feel. The open kitchen includes sleek cabinets, a built-in refrigerator, and two sinks.

The designers replaced the patio sliding door with a NanaWall system that floods the room with light, making the space feel more expansive and providing a stronger connection to the outdoors.

Judges’ comments

This project’s greatest achievement is that “it doesn’t feel like a basement,” the judges said. The “sleekly designed” space also provides clever storage behind large sliding doors. A set of three 3form acrylic panels slide across to cover the window wells, creating an up-lit, glowing effect.
