Project Description
The story begins with a young couple and their 3 boys outgrowing a Manhattan apartment. They found an ideal location for their new home on the shores of the Long Island Sound, where forest meets sand. After finding the architect and contractor, they designed their dream house and began the demolition of a non-descript modernist box with a little help from the boys themselves.
The beautiful site has glorious views of Westchester County to the north and sun-drenched windows to the south. The architects created a long bar along the shore to maximize water views in each room while letting southern light in. The resultant “great room” strings together Den, Breakfast, Kitchen, Dining and spacious Living Room ideal for a modern family lifestyle and for entertaining visiting guests from the city.
Presenting a traditional face to the street, this gracious shingle-style home greets you with glimpses of the water. The front door frames a jaw dropping view through a bank of floor to ceiling windows which span the rear of the house. Inside, little feet skitter across European white oak floors, up a shaker staircase leading to a long, sun-swept hallway. Each room along the vaulted corridor has lavish views of the Sound across a vast lawn rolling down to the beach. Salt kissed air flows freely through open balcony doors and windows.
From the time of the Great Gatsby, the Sound has represented the freedom and whimsy of summer, and this home embraces the Sound while providing a comfortable year-round stage & backdrop for this family’s unfolding story.
