The AIA announced eight winners of the 2014 AIA/AAH Healthcare Design Awards, which highlight the best healthcare buildings as well as research projects related to healthcare design. These eight projects span four categories: Built (less than $25 million construction cost), Built (more than $25 million construction cost), Unbuilt, and Innovations in Planning and Design Research. Jury members included Eric Goodfriend, AIA (jury chair), Roger Call, AIA, Jim Lennon, James C. Lord II, AIA, Mark Patterson, AIA, Mark Tortorich, FAIA, and Shane Williams, AIA.

Category A: Built (less than $25 million construction cost)
Legacy ER, Allen, Texas
5G Studio Collaborative
Jury: “This architectural response to a straightforward planning solution is an exciting vision of how good design represents the intent of a building. Angular forms identify this facility as an important place without intimidating patrons.”
Lightwell: Greater Boston Orthodontics, Waltham, Mass.
Merge Architects, Boston
Jury: “Materials, graphics, color palette, lighting, and form combine with an elegant use of space to energize this gem of a small office fit-out. It is both creative and restrained in a pleasing way.”
Category B: Built (more than $25 million construction cost)
Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, Lancaster, Pa.
Ballinger, Philadelphia
Jury: “The connection of the building program elements to the exterior landscape demonstrates how spatial constraints can be made transparent and yet comforting in very clinical settings. Bold gesture captures light for all patrons of this special purpose facility.”
Rush University Medical Center New Hospital Tower, Chicago.
Perkins+Will
Jury: “A truly iconic structure for the City of Broad Shoulders; this building clearly sets itself apart on a highly visible site and in a highly competitive marketplace to provide a refreshing impression of the technology being provided on a leading medical campus.”
Mount Sinai Hess Center for Science and Medicine, New York.
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill
Jury: “A truly iconic structure for the City of Broad Shoulders; this building clearly sets itself apart on a highly visible site and in a highly competitive marketplace to provide a refreshing impression of the technology being provided on a leading medical campus.”
Category C: Unbuilt
Children’s Hospital of Richmond Pavilion (CHoRP), Richmond, Va.
HKS
Jury: “A strong concept and sophisticated approach to a difficult program are evidence of the focus this team brought to this solution. The design respects the difficulties of the site and the opportunities of designing for a children’s health facility.”
Category D: Innovations in Planning and Design Research
GHESKIO Cholera Treatment Center, Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
MASS Design Group, Boston
Jury: “The craft of design and construction are evident throughout this facility. This is a culturally relevant response to specific community concerns that will have an impact far beyond the act of placing a healthcare building on a site.”
Cincinnati Children's Family Pet Center, Cincinnati.
GBBN Architects, Cincinnati
Jury: “It is rare to find a project of this scale that is so carefully considered and crafted with such optimism. The purpose of the project is itself innovative and the design team responded with a bit of whimsy and a lot of skill to activate a dreary outdoor space for an important patient experience.”
