The AIA named the 2014 Honor Awards, selecting 26 projects from over 700 submissions. Nine of the awards were granted to interior architecture projects. The 2014 Honor Awards for Architecture are as follows:

Bar Agricole (San Francisco)

Matthew Millman

Aidlin Darling Design

This 1,400-square-foot restaurant and bar, located in a former warehouse in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood, was designed by locally-based Aidlin Darling Design with an attention to craft: artisans fashioned a striking “hull” made of reclaimed oak whiskey barrels that hangs from the ceiling.

K&L Gates at One New Change (London)

Lehman Smith McLeish

Lehman Smith McLeish designed these offices for American law firm K&L Gates in Jean Nouvel’s One New Changes Building in London; collaborative workspaces and break-out rooms offer dramatic views of St. Paul’s Cathedral across the street.

Knoll Flagship Showroom, Offices, and Shop (New York)

Elizabeth Felicella

Architecture Research Office

Knoll’s flagship outpost in a mid-century skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan showcases the company’s history (with a multimedia timeline) as well as products (a 55-foot wall boasts 2,400 material samples), and includes a mix of open-plan and private workspaces.

The Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust (Los Angeles)

Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust

Belzberg Architects

Light was one of the dominant themes of this 32,000-square-foot museum project by Belzberg Architects in Santa Monica, Calif., with visitors gradually descending from the entrance in Pan Pacific Park into the dimly lit interior before slowly reemerging into more abundant natural light and park views.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Showroom (New York)

Scott Frances

Jaklitsch/Gardner Architects PC, HLW International

New York-based Jaklitsch/Gardner redesigned this showroom in Marc Jacobs’ Manhattan headquarters; a curvilinear glass form allows daylight to filter into the deep floor plate and separates zones for merchandise.

Odegaard Undergraduate Library (Seattle)

Lara Swimmer

The Miller Hull Partnership

Seattle-based Miller Hull renovated this 165,000-square-foot, 1970s-era library at the University of Washington, enhancing its energy efficiency and meeting current student needs by incorporating 21st-century technology.

SoHo Loft (New York)

Paul Warchol

Gabellini Sheppard Associates

Lighting was also a dominate theme for this 8,300-square-foot loft project by New York-based Gabellini Sheppard, which features panoramic views of the Cast Iron Historic District, two vertical light wells, and sliding translucent doors that divide public and private spaces, as well as zones for adults and children.

The Pierre (San Juan Islands, Wash.)

Benjamin Benschneider

Olson Kundig Architects

Located on San Juan Island off the Washington state coast, The Pierre project by Olson Kundig was sited in a stone outcropping, which intrudes into the space; stone excavated before construction was reused as crushed aggregate for the concrete flooring and a boulder wall in the carport.

Venture Capital Office Headquarters (Menlo Park, Calif.)

Eric Staudenmaier

Paul Murdoch Architects, Kappe Architects Planners

Local firms Paul Murdoch Architects and Kappe Architects Planners designed this office space in Menlo Park, Calif., using prefabricated steel modules; removable walls and glass partitions allowing start-ups who take up temporary residence in the building to reconfigure their spaces.
