AIA Chicago recognized 33 of the city’s architectural achievements Friday evening with the announcement of the Design Excellence Award winners. Designight 2014 gathered over 900 architects, designers, contractors, and clients in the Navy Pier’s Grand Ballroom for a celebration honoring the city’s architecture and design community. In its 59th year, the awards merited honorees in four categories including distinguished building, interior architecture, divine detail, and unbuilt design. From a field of 253 entries, the 33 winning firms include Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (recipient of four awards), Perkins+Will, and Ross Barney Architects among others.
Also honored was esteemed architect John Vinci, FAIA, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award celebrating his many accomplishments, including his integral role in preserving classic Chicago architecture.
He joins a rank of notable past winners including Stanley Tigerman, FAIA, Helmut Jahn, Ben Weese, Walter Netsch, John Holabird Jr.,Gertude Kerbis, Natalie de Blois, and jointly, Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett.
"The influence of Chicago architects reaches down the street and across the globe," says AIA Chicago board president Scott Rappe in AIA Chicago’s press release, "and the 2014 Design Excellence Awards winners are proof of that."
