Solutions
This remodel deftly transforms a drab split-level home into a contemporary showplace to suit the owner’s modern lifestyle. The original low window and door head heights caused the house to have a darkened, cave-like feel. The solution: add a two-story glass box with a breakfast room on the upper level and a home gym on the bottom, bringing in an abundance of natural light.
The interior has undergone a remarkable change. Walls were modified or completely removed to create an open family room that greets guests entering through the two-story skylit foyer. A minimal open-riser stair, crafted from white oak, further enhances the home’s newfound feeling of openness.
Judges’ comments
“The clean lines, liberated plan, and large expanses of glass are compelling. ... Most traditionalists could be happy to call this house home.” —Mark A. Newman, senior editor, REMODELING.
