"Pedestrian suburban house turns into a little jewel.” That's the way our judges summed up this raised ranch makeover, and we could not have written a better headline.

Architects Brian Johnsen, AIA, and Sebastian Schmaling, AIA, retained the building's existing foundation and utility core while raising the roof with a new system of wood-and-steel trusses and a full-length clerestory. Cor-Ten steel wraps the existing exterior walls, while red cedar defines modest but high-impact amendments to the building shell.
