Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects challenged convention with this residence in the Houses at Sagaponac development on Long Island, N.Y. “It's addressing the problem of the American suburban dwelling, which is an object on a lot with space all around it,” explains Henry Smith-Miller, RA. He and his colleagues pulled the house's two main masses—a two-story volume containing guest and family quarters and a one-story wing comprising living/dining functions—to the outskirts of the site, creating a series of private outdoor rooms between them. “It feels generous without being ostentatious,” said one judge.
