In 1961, the AIA awarded the first Gold Medal for Photography to Ezra Stoller (1915–2004), an artist whose ability to turn buildings into near-Platonic ideals helped Modernism’s bold moves in form-making—such as Eero Saarinen’s TWA Terminal (shown)—gain acceptance.
