“Bureau Spectacular imagines other worlds and engages the design of architecture through telling stories,” the Los Angeles studio says about its work. On Saturday, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will open an installation based on one of these imaginings, a drawing titled “insideoutsidebetweenbeyond” (2014) by the studio’s founder Jimenez Lai, which the museum acquired about two years ago.
"Reconsidering urban architecture inside, outside, between, and beyond the monotonous rectangular buildings seen in most city skylines, the exhibition offers an urban landscape littered with surrealistic architectural forms and jarring environments," SFMOMA notes.
This new exhibition will build upon the firm's prior work, such as "The Tower of Twelve Stories" installation at last April's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. “This installation at SFMOMA will continue a series of tower proposals that explore certain organizational diagrams in architectural section, like the Tower of Twelve Stories,” Lai says.
"Bureau Spectacular: insideoutsidebetweenbeyond" runs from Feb. 11 through Aug. 13, 2017. For more information about Bureau Spectacular, visit ARCHITECT's Project Gallery.
