Serpentine Pavilion 2017, Designed by Francis Kéré, Design Render, Exterior

Summer pavilion season is approaching. The 17th Serpentine Pavilion, commissioned by London’s Serpentine Galleries, opens on June 23, and construction has begun on the structure designed by Francis Kéré, Hon. FAIA. ARCHITECT’s Symone Garvett explained the design when the project was announced in February: “The winning concept was inspired by a tree in his native Gando, Burkina Faso, which served as a central meeting place for the community. The pavilion mimics the shape of that tree’s canopy, and welcomes visitors through four different entry points in the exterior wall. Visitors are encouraged to sit in the open-air courtyard at the pavilion’s center.”

The 2017 Serpentine Pavilion will be open from June 23 through Oct. 8, 2017.
