Mecanoo Architecten announced today that construction has begun on the firm's first built project in China. The development in Shenzhen spans 1.02 million square feet, and includes museums for art and for science, a youth center, a five-story "book mall," retail, and parking. The aptly named Three Cultural Centers & One Book Mall project is scheduled to be completed by 2017.
The Netherlands-based firm is also currently working on a renovation of the 1972 Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, D.C., which was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The MLK Library project is the firm's second project in the United States. For more projects by Mecanoo, visit ARCHITECT's Project Gallery.
