For the first time, Miami and Miami Beach will play host to the esteemed Open House Worldwide festival, a global initiative aimed at making cities more open, accessible, and inclusive. Scheduled for March 1-2, 2024, this event will spotlight Miami's rich architectural heritage and vibrant urban landscape.
The Miami Center for Architecture and Design (MCAD), in collaboration with the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority (MBVCA), the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA), and over 75 local partners, is leading the charge to celebrate the city's architectural and design prowess through Open House Miami (OHMIA).
This two-day event, free and open to the public, will offer over 50 unique experiences across 15 diverse neighborhoods. From the sandy beaches to the towering skyscrapers, OHMIA aims to unlock the stories and designs that define Miami's allure.
The festival will delve into various themes, including Sacred Spaces, Culture, Resilience, Building Miami, Sports, Glamour and Grandeur, and the city's Curiosities and Colorful Past. Attendees can look forward to an immersive program featuring workshops, behind-the-scenes tours, expert lectures, performances, and curated experiences. It also offers a rare opportunity to meet some of the world-renowned architects who have shaped both Miami and Miami Beach.
Highlights of the event include exploring the confluence of high fashion and urban design at Istituto Marangoni, celebrating Little Havana's culture at the Koubek Center with the Miami Film Festival and the Miami Book Fair, marveling at the Moorish Revival architecture in Opa-locka, and tracing Miami's architectural evolution along Brickell Avenue.
David Whitaker, President & CEO of GMCVB, emphasized the importance of making destinations accessible to both visitors and residents, stating, "Open House will provide a first-time peek behind the scenes of iconic buildings and venues that are pivotal to our history and brand. It's about creating a true sense of place that reflects our spirit and heritage."
With Miami joining New York, San Diego, and Chicago as the fourth U.S. city to participate in this global movement, OHMIA signifies a major step towards engaging citizens in conversations about their city's future, while celebrating its historical and architectural significance. The event promises direct access to selected buildings across Miami and Miami Beach, encouraging community members and visitors to connect, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogues.
