More than eight months since demolition began, Bertrand Goldberg's Prentice Women's Hospital is nearly gone. The 1975 structure in Chicago is being razed to make way for a Biomedical Research Building, to be designed by Perkins+Will.

Last Saturday, in the city for the AIA Convention 2014, I walked the few blocks from my hotel to Northwestern University's Chicago campus. I only know the building from pictures, but I can imagine (and see from Google Street View) that the four massive tubes with ship-like windows were a formidable presence from the street. On Saturday, only two sets of intersecting arches remained to suggest such a structure. They were nearly invisible from E Huron Street.
