Scottish tidal energy consortium MeyGen‘s tidal stream project has has officially been launched with the unveiling of its first 49-foot, 440,925-pound turbine—which will soon be sent to its final location off the northern coast of Scotland. Ultimately, the project aims to have 269 of these massive turbines that would be able to produce enough electricity to power 175,000 homes.
“It gives me enormous pride to have reached this juncture after 10 years of tireless work, preparation and planning by everyone associated with this project.” says Tim Cornelius, chief executive of Edinburgh-based developer Atlantis Resources, to The Guardian, “This is the day the tidal power industry announced itself as the most exciting new asset class of renewable, sustainable generation in the UK’s future energy mix.”
