It’s summer and—in North America, at least—that means embracing the outdoors. When the sun goes down, intimate outdoor lighting is a must. While we at Architectural Lighting typically discuss outdoor illumination in terms of large-scale applications, this time we’re thinking smaller. These four portable fixtures bring just enough light to sit back and savor the stars.
Pablo
Uma, Pablo
Bring
the beats—and the light—to outdoor gatherings with Uma. From San Francisco–based
lighting studio Pablo, the handheld lantern, which debuted at ICFF 2015, projects LED light and sound in 360
degrees. An eight-hour battery, Bluetooth connectivity, and handy leather strap
let users bring the luminaire wherever they need light. The fixture stands
11” tall and rests on a 6”-wide base, where speakers and an on/off button are
integrated. The leather strap, which comes in tan, brown, and black, is paired
with a decorative aluminum ring that conceals a second speaker.
Ipnos, Flos
Larger than a typical lantern but, at 2.4 lbs., just as portable, Ipnos comes in 3300K with a CRI of 85. Its slender aluminum and polycarbonate frame measures 27.6” tall by 13.8” wide and deep, with dimmable LEDs integrated in the 15W fixture’s upper edge. It was designed for Flos by Milan lighting studio Rossi Bianchi for use outdoors, where it can be used to add visual interest to dark corners or other spaces in need of a little light. It is offered in black, bronze, and natural finishes.
Mr. n, Koncept
This luminous arch brings soft light to tabletops indoors and outdoors. From Koncept, the 5W Mr. n is fitted with 28 LEDs in 2700K diffused seamlessly across the 7.5” tall bend. The fixture’s aluminum housing comes in metallic black, silver, and custom colors, and it features touch on/off and continuous dimming. A 10’ cord allows for easy movement around a small space.
Follow Me, Marset
A plywood handle with an oak veneer encourages users to take this compact lantern wherever they need light. The dimmable, 3.2W LED Follow Me fixture comes in 2700K and is powered by an integrated battery with a USB port for easy recharging. Its opal diffuser is made of white matte polycarbonate and can be adjusted in two directions for focused illumination. A brass switch offers on/off control.
