Project Description
A multi-story vertical link was needed between the new South Tower and the General Hospital at each floor of Sinai Hospital. This link enclosed a triangular shaped area where the old and new buildings intersected creating the new Atrium, a vibrant 8,000 sf public space. The interior of the four-story open space features a 40-foot tall water wall that is a focal point within the atrium. The ‘Water Fall’ provides a beautiful backdrop for the display of benefactors’ names, as well as soothing sounds of water that can be heard throughout the space. It showcases water cascading over stone (slate) slabs with integrated LED “mood lighting”.
Access to the new South Tower for patients, staff and visitors would need to pass through in-patient units including intensive care and intermediate care.
Access is provided at each floor bypassing the individual units through the new vertical link. With glass on both sides, natural light pours into the new atrium below and patient rooms, which look out onto this new public space.
The roof garden above the atrium was the first green roof system to be installed on the Sinai Hospital campus. It consists of low-maintenance sedum plants in 4” of growth media. The sedum plants have matured in the two years since the space opened and require very little maintenance from the hospital. This set the stage for more green roofs on new buildings around the campus including the expanded Levindale Skilled Nursing Facility.
