OPPORTUNITY: The CEO of a national furnishings and housewares distributor approached Booth Hansen to design a vacation home on the dunes of Beverly Shores, overlooking Lake Michigan. His request consisted of “lots of glass, high ceilings and a WOW factor”.

SOLUTION: Situated on the sand dunes of Indiana, the site has clear, elevated views of the lake to the north and the dense woods to the south on a hillside site. The design of the 4,700 sf home consists of a floating glass box with the main living spaces cantilevered over a board-formed concrete plinth which houses guest bedrooms and utilities. Worked into the hillside, the concrete base allows the organic forms of the shifting sand dunes to undulate around the house as it extends into the topography. The glass box above torques to accentuate the connections with access points to the beach and the woods, and a soaring roof inspired by the wind swept dunes completes the gesture with deep overhangs to shade the all-glass living spaces. The addition of an energy recovery ventilation system, geo-thermal heating, radiant floors, remote home monitoring/control system and high performance low-e glass work in concert to maintain total performance of all building systems.

VALUE: By connecting the house to the landscape both visually and with designed access points on both levels, the design responds to its surroundings by taking advantage of the natural slopes and undulations of the site and working itself into the existing matrix of the dunes, lake, topography and woods. In doing so, the second level glass aerie feels truly elevated above the earth, a perch from which to view the expansive beauty of the lakefront.
