“I love how this project displays such an enormous respect for the landscape that it is nested in. It shows a deeply rich connection to historic Italian architecture in its restrained use of color and material.” — Juror Joey Shimoda, FAIA
The 39-unit Casa di Langa luxury resort in Cerreto Langhe, Cuneo, Italy was designed to evoke a private countryside estate in the Piemonte region of Northern Italy. Milan-based GaS Studio with Parisotto+Formenton Architetti incorporated an existing structure from the early 2000s into the 3,000-square-meters (about 32,300-square-feet) complex that sits within a rural setting of 104 acres of vineyards, hazelnut groves, and forests on the slopes of the Italian Piedmont. The C-shaped plan is centered on an open space that cascades down the hillside in a series of landscaped terraces. Support facilities include a spa and wellness center, gym, outdoor pool, bocce pitch, and detached country villa.
Each room and suite has a large, covered private loggia. External open-air corridors, each screened by brick or wood brise-soleil to offer shade and ventilation, provide access to each individual unit. Material choices of deep red Stucco, brick, wood and roof tiles were chosen to reflect the region’s dominant hues. Exterior horizontal surfaces are all locally sourced Lucerne granite, with varying textures from slabs to blocks and pavers to gravel. In these details, Casa di Langa’s recasts traditional forms in a contemporary manner, maintaining their sustainable essence while successfully conveying their modernity.
