Project Description
Builder's Choice and Custom Home Awards Finalist
Chestnut Ridge Farm, a spectacular property in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is the site of a large chestnut orchard. With three kids and two dogs, the new owners wanted an addition, a renovated kitchen, and the entire house opened to the magnificent landscape beyond.
By limiting the height of the addition and providing second floor dormers, the new work has a cottage-like charm and sits comfortably next to the strong mass of the existing house. The addition is angled slightly to maximize the stunning mountain views.
We completely transformed the kitchen by adding exterior walls of glass, vaulting the existing 8' ceilings, and providing shed dormers. The result is a room with a glorious sense of spaciousness and light.
We rethought the house's relationship to the landscape and the fantastic mountain views to the north. By replacing small double-hung windows with large bays and adding new French doors, each room now takes full advantage of the view. A long porch with a pergola on the garden side of the house connects the new addition and renovated kitchen and gives the family generous spaces from which to enjoy the outdoors.
