Project Description
FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
Moody Nolan, in collaboration with Design-Build partner Ujamaa-Power Joint Venture, designed and developed this new 160,000 sq. ft. high school located in Chicago’s Englewood community. The new Englewood school will help transform the landscape of Chicago’s Southside; envisioned as a modern campus intended to replace an existing, aging high school located on the site. Among other programmed spaces, the high school includes flexible break-out spaces along the main academic corridors, a multi-functional gymnasium / auditorium space, competitive athletic fields and facilities, and a library center highlighted by an angled terminus in the building. The Metra Rock Island District/Union Pacific Railway line serves as the site’s most prominent feature – a point strengthening the Architectural design vision to “Reach Beyond”. Passing the site’s edge and through the Englewood community, the railroad metaphorically connects the site/community to the city’s hub and therefore, beyond. The project includes a school-based Health Center accessible to the Englewood community and strengthens the physical relationship by including public plaza spaces in the front of the school. This project is designed to achieve LEED v4 Silver certification.
