Down a hill, butting up to the Austin green belt sits a two story house in the Lost Creek neighborhood. Built in 1989, the homeowners felt that it was time to update and remodel their kitchen to better fit their needs for cooking and entertaining and to reflect their elegant traditional style. The original kitchen had an awkward, cramped layout with outdated finishes. In the middle of the space was a skinny, tiled-top island and prep sink. The wash sink was located in the corner of the kitchen and the two-level, tile topped bar had a peninsula island that jetted out and enclosed the space. Additionally, the cabinets hung on the walls and did not go all the way up to the ceiling. The kitchen was also lacking storage space and prep areas. A new layout was designed to open up the space. Originally the microwave, oven, and cooktop were located on one wall. In the new design, the cook top transferred to the opposite side of the kitchen and the small pantry behind the old microwave and oven was extended out to create a bigger walk in space, which also moved the cooking appliances over. This then allowed for a new coffee/breakfast bar and fold out pantry to be constructed. Replacing the small prep island is a large, granite island with a vegetable sink. The old wash sink was then moved to the center back wall and out of the corner. The old kitchen window was replaced with a wider casement window. Moving further into the space is the new Wolf range and hood located now in the updated bar, which is open to the updated living space allowing the cook to interact with family and friends. Also, at the end of the bar is a new beverage refrigerator that’s conveniently open to the social space. While the new layout and updated appliances were enough to satisfy the homeowners, the elegance of the finishes and the hidden details is what sets this kitchen a part. The old, builder-grade cabinets were replaced with new painted cabinets with custom profiling. Three piece crown moulding take the cabinets all the way to the ceiling and pilaster details can be found throughout the space. New granite counter tops replace the old tile- topped ones along with a cushioned tile backsplash. The Sub-Zero refrigerator, dishwasher, trash compactor and icemaker are all built-in behind cabinetry. The coffee/breakfast bar can be concealed too, with slide away doors with textured wire glass. Further hidden aspects include storage space under knee space in the bar and island and innovatively constructed spice rack pilasters flanking the Wolf range pull out for easy access during cooking. Lastly, new task and under cabinet lighting along with elegant pendant lighting above the kitchen island brighten the space. Now, with a new, elegant kitchen, this Austin family can enjoy their transformed home with comfort and ease and plenty of room for entertaining.
