“It’s five distinct yet interrelated companies that they're bringing in one roof, and I think it's somewhat of a feat that the resulting office has such a singular and cohesive vision.” –Juror Brooke Horan
A consolidated office space for five distinct yet interrelated organizations of Pohlad Companies, Gateway22 encompasses nearly 71,000 square feet over three floors of the RBC Gateway Tower in Minneapolis with an aesthetically polished and energetic interior design aimed at attracting and supporting employees. Crafted by Snow Kreilich Architects, the workplace is unified by a dramatic three-story staircase volume defined by a slatted-wood balustrade that, on the upper flight, seemingly wraps the underside of the stair treads. From here, those traversing the steps are treated to panoramic views down Hennepin Avenue to the Mississippi River.
Throughout, the slatted wood motif and use of rift white oak surfaces tie the design together yet in distinct ways. For instance, the reception desks are clad in wood and sit under slatted wood acoustic ceilings, while in key areas intended for gathering — such as the shared café and lounge spaces — wood sticks are mounted vertically onto the ceiling along with vertical light bars to create a dynamic topography. Elsewhere, timber covers the landing at the base of the staircase, forms built-in storage, and wraps select wall areas.
With the goal of prioritizing occupant health and comfort, the design team applied the WELL Materials Concept in various ways. For instance, offices and workstations were laid out to ensure views to the perimeter glazing for access to natural light, while offices situated further from the perimeter are glass-fronted to bring that natural light in. The team also specified many products and furnishings demonstrating that they’re free from certain harmful compounds through material disclosures or transparency labels. And finally, a shared outdoor terrace on the south side offers fresh air, views of the city skyline, and plenty of opportunities to relax, mingle, and even work outdoors at furniture groupings ranging from loungers around a fire pit to café seating and tables.
