Project Description
This project is part of the Apan Housing Laboratory, which is featured in the August 2019 issue of ARCHITECT.
FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
Planning separate program volumes around a open, unenclosed courtyard, this proposal ties the private home to communal space without the undifferentiated repetition and identical of standard housing types. Flexible orientation of building volumes, abundant courtyard space, and thoughtful orientation of roof slopes/drainage actively conserve the natural environment and address two contextual shortages: social space and water.
Notes: Most significant for this project is its resolutely social character, a result of its free organization of single-program volumes around a publicly accessible primary element: the flat surface of a rectangular central courtyard. Any growth to a single unit must occur through either the arrangement of additional modules around this courtyard or the construction of a new, adjacent one. Despite facing inward toward its courtyard, this proposal is open to its urban condition through its unwalled edge and overall expansion toward a field/mat of quasipublic courtyards.
