Project Description
This project is part of the Apan Housing Laboratory, which is featured in the August 2019 issue of ARCHITECT.
FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
The proposed housing unit is ordered as two bays around a fixed service core; one bay houses a wood-framed interior space, the other a fiberglass-covered exterior terrace. Offering shade and protection from the elements, these portico spaces create fluid and flexible living between interior and exterior. Non-structural partitions allow for a similar fluidity or flexibility(and programming) of the unit’s interior and, after painting by residents, in its appearance.
Notes: The primary element of this project is its straightforward recuperation of a vernacular house type, generous in both is provision of porch space and in its interior layout. Entirely closed/blank on two of its sides but otherwise open to the exterior, it suggests an infill site and party walls. This select openness
to the exterior establishes a clear front and back for the house; the free flow of
interiors onto the porch, then onto the landscape suggests a certain presentation of private life and socialization to the surrounding community.
