Project Description
Aedas designs the iconic gateway to China's Greater Bay Area, the Huanggang Port New Development Project in collaboration with Shenzhen CAPOL International & Associates Co., Ltd. and Shenzhen Transportation Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd.
Situated in Shenzhen's Futian District, the Huanggang Port facilitates 50% of Shenzhen's inbounding and outbounding vehicles. After 30 years of operation, nearly one billion passengers and over 200 million motor vehicles have crossed the port, making it one of the most crucial cross-border port in China. The Huanggang Port's geographical location makes it not only the gateway to Shenzhen but also a vital channel that connects Shenzhen, Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.
The function of the project poses a significant design challenge. The port must efficiently organise complex immigration facilities within the compact site of approximately 80,000 sq m in the downtown Shenzhen area. The objective is to transform the Huanggang Port through a set of immigration and three-dimensional integrated transport hubs to achieve effective inter-Greater Bay Area and cross-border connectivity. The design is complemented by a series of green space, sunken plaza, to connect Futian Port, New Huangang Port, and the central axis of Shenzhen-HK Cooperation Zone. Through the new design's seamless connectivity, the port will be a gateway to Shenzhen and fulfil the city's changing transportation requirements while granting the community greenery and public space.
Aedas proposes efficient, compatible and green as the tenets for Huanggang Port's design. The port will be built into an effective and convenient gateway with an integrated three-dimensional transportation hub. It will integrate commerce, culture and life with plenty of greenery and space for the public. The Basement Level seamlessly connects the port to the rail network to establish an efficient interchange between the surrounding rail stations and a high degree of integration between the city's green axis, rail transportation networks and the old and new ports.

Inspired by the concept of ‘the cornerstone’, the Huanggang Port is a symmetrical architectural form that sits on an elevated landscaped base, embodying the literal definition, heralding the new port’s potential as the foundation of the GBA area.
The curtained wall system is made from predominately new stone material to showcase a contemporary and futuristic aesthetic while highlighting the weight and gravity of the port. The facade of the main entrance is elevated and unveils an interior glass curtain wall that boasts an inviting appeal.
The port's interior design is inspired by Shenzhen's emblem flower, the Bougainvillea. The elegant and intricate curves and detailing from the flower is adapted to create a distinctive interior roof motif that bolsters the vibrant Shenzhen spirit.
