Project Description

The Langford Auditorium at Vanderbilt University Medical Center is the main campus venue for conferences, lectures, theater productions and the University’s commencement ceremony. The 30-year old space was an 1,100 seat auditorium with a brick interior, poor acoustics and lighting. The stage lacked a proscenium and combined with the wide and deep hall, the auditorium lacked focus. By adding a proscenium and re-shaping the side walls and the ceiling planes, the renovation improved the stage focus and the acoustical properties of the hall.

The concentric arced steps of the ceiling are reinforced by concealed lighting at the edges. Their lines are covered through by the maple cladding on the side walls. The projecting side panels conceal lighting gantries and the proscenium encloses the audio visual upgrades.

The renovation also includes upgrading the mechanical systems and providing additional backstage facilities, including dressing rooms and storage, to provide a versatile, multi-purpose auditorium.
