Project Description

The new 7,200 square foot L.S. Skaggs Animal Health Center is a state-of-the-art animal care facility that nearly doubles the amount of treatment, hospital and quarantine space Utah’s Hogle Zoo has previously maintained. The Animal Health Center provides indoor and outdoor holding capabilities for large and small animals, dedicated hospital wards, a large treatment room, office area, medical spaces, and a necropsy. The holding area will be used as quarantine for all incoming animals to ensure the health of the zoo collection, and in addition, it will house animals as they recover from medical procedures.

With completion in October 2009, the Animal Health Center received LEED Gold Certification. Key features of the project include a rooftop photovoltaic array which provides over 20% of the building’s energy needs, daylighting strategies to enhance occupant comfort and reduce energy use, and the use of sustainable materials throughout the building.

CLR Design worked closely with the Owner throughout the design process to develop strategies that enhanced the function of the building as a hospital through sustainable choices.
