Project Description
FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
The owner of the Aspen Residence approached CCY with the desire to have a rigorous contemporary house; yet a house that responds to, and connects with, its site and the environment.
The house is conceived as three separate pods connected by transparent links. The pods are pure forms with eroded corners, cantilevering over solid bases. Recessed dark framed windows tie into solid dark panels with deep shadow lines. The windows and paneling are offset by light, rough textured, vertical wood siding, and crisp horizontal metal siding; both siding materials respond to and are harmonious with the surrounding landscape of scrub oak and sage brush. The cantilevers are accentuated as the site drops off into a deep ravine, perching the occupants above the creek below.
The house has a strong interior to exterior connection with panoramic views to the east across the ravine and a direct connection to an outdoor room on the southwest. The outdoor room nestles into the ground, bounded by architectural site walls to the south and west, and is embraced by the house on the north and east. The outdoor room takes advantage of solar access and uses the mass of the pods to deflect noise from a nearby highway. Native vegetation extends to the edge of the site walls creating a Zen like oasis in the landscape.
The interiors are crisply detailed and minimalist. Clean plaster and painted walls with simple shadow line detailing at floors, doors and windows. European cabinetry and built-ins, in warm tones, help create inviting spaces. Flooring materials extend seamlessly to the exterior expanding the interior spaces and engage the site.
