Project Description

The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is a world renowned art school situated amidst the national historic neighborhood of Bolton Hill and the cultural district of Baltimore City. Hord Coplan Macht, along with Lazarus Design Associates, has collaborated with MICA to create beautiful and creative outdoor places and landscapes which are weaving together a cohesive and memorable campus. The Gateway is a student resident apartment complex designed by RTKL located on Mt Royal Avenue at the northern edge of the urban campus.

Creatively integrate the building and site to add to the success of this unique mixed use building and create a gateway to the campus, the community and the Art’s District.

The street level plaza, activated by an elegant fountain, provides a place for outdoor dining, seating, and a lawn for sunning. The upper level courtyard provides an outdoor space just for students. Lush plantings including a bamboo forest, and a plaza with a variety of comfortable seating, create an environment for studying, meeting friends, or programmed activities.
