Project Description
The expansion and modernization of McKinley Elementary School provided the opportunity to fully integrate curriculum, sustainability and community under one roof. Through a series of immersive hands-on workshops, a design concept was developed to incorporate these key elements, creating a transformative learning environment.
As part of a larger district-wide need to address exploding enrollment, the project adds 225 new permanent seats to this existing 57,300 sf school, bringing the total enrollment capacity to 665. The 27,000 sf expansion provides additional instructional and support spaces, while also addressing organization and systemic issues within the whole school and site. Construction occurred while the school was fully occupied requiring a carefully thought-out design and phasing plan.
The design integrates a variety of factors, including the school’s hallmark “Kaleidoscope Project” – a project that reaches all learners through engaging art activities such as drawing, painting, drama, music and dance.
