Solutions
When they came up against budgetary restrictions, the owners of this San Francisco-area residence opted to delay completing their whole-house remodel—until the pitter-patter of little feet came along. With the pending arrival of the family’s second child, the homeowner called on Building Lab to complete the master suite renovation using the plan from the original architect as inspiration.
Contractor Stephen Shoup says that simplicity, clean lines, and continuity drove the design. To achieve that, the team removed door headers and created a continuous ceiling plane interrupted only by slots for sliding doors. Flush detailing of tile with drywall, and sliding glass doors that converge at an inside corner further highlight the precise alignment of materials and reveals throughout the space.
Drawing on themes from the earlier project, Shoup and his clients chose a selection of products to bring warmth and texture to the space. A custom-designed ipe floor mat sits flush with the floor at the edge of the bathtub, while frosted glass panels work with lighting to maximize depth. To lend more weight to the space, Caesarstone didn’t just serve as the countertop material but as a full wrap for the vanity and medicine cabinets as well.
Judges’ Comments
The team’s use of materials paid off. Judges liked the mirror and called the project “nice and clean” with an “interesting use of colors and texture.”
