Project Description

New Fairfield CT Addition / Remodel by DeMotte Architects

Project location: New Fairfield, CT
Project type: Addition/Alteration
Completion date: 2013
Architect: Brad DeMotte, R.A.

The existing cape style house was a summer home in a gated community, sited on top of a hill with sweeping views of Candlewood Lake. The house was sited poorly on the lot, with the gable end of the house facing the street. The exterior was also dated, with the “traditional” Candlewood wavy clapboard siding that’s the norm for the area.

The goal was to create a proper front elevation from the street, while also maximizing the views of the lake. The garage can be entered from 2 sides with carriage style doors, accommodating 1 car and a collection of motorcycles. The addition consisted of creating a new garage, a master bedroom suite, a larger family room, and a wrap around deck on the first floor.

The existing garage was converted to a billiard room. A media room & music room will be created in the basement, with a large terrace under the curved deck.

Exterior materials include cedar shingle siding, extensive use of stone veneer, synthetic roofing that simulate cedar shakes, bronze clad Marvin windows, and PVC trim, resulting in a low maintenance exterior. The decking will be synthetic as well, with stainless steel cable rails. Bungalow columns sitting on stone piers that support the deck. Note that the space below the deck will have a finished ceiling, being possible by use of a membrane being placed between the deck joists allowing water to drain through the deck, but then to a hidden gutter & leaders.

Green design principles include the use of polyicynene spray foam insulation throughout, and rainwater will be collected in an underground cistern to be used for lawn watering.
