Project Description
The overall park project is the result of a 2015 community-led master park plan that illustrated potential new public space improvements surrounding the Eastern Market Metro Station. The primary objective of the enhancements is to transform the Metro Park area and the surrounding parkland, managed by the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), into a safe and thriving ‘Town Square’ supportive of multi-generational social activities in the historic Capitol Hill community for residents to enjoy.
The Phase 1 renovation work, performed by the Department of General Services (DGS), includes a playground for 2-5 year olds, playground space for 5-12 year olds, a recreation lawn, deck nature area, bioretention space, and a splash pad. The new park will encompass 21st Century standards and best practices in programming, safety and sustainability, and the creation of a ‘Town Square’ that can be used as a “destination park.” Project renovations will also improve pedestrian access while increasing safety, circulation and wayfinding. Phase 2 work will involve renovations to the remaining five parcels of land and is anticipated to begin in fall 2020.
