Project Description
This project was selected as a Merit winner in the 2024 Residential Architect Design Awards, Specialized Housing category.
“I love the fact that they are putting the community on the exterior of the project and on view, and allowing people to gather a in a very organic way.” –Juror Rene Gonzalez
Developed as a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment for the formerly homeless, LGBTQ+ community, senior citizens, and young people coming out of the foster care system, this Riverside, California complex encompasses a cluster of 1920s craftsman-style bungalows arranged around a community garden on a block-wide site. In addition to converting the bungalows into transitional housing for up to 50 persons, the architects incorporated covered porches that modulate between the homes with some jutting out and others wrapping around corners at the rear of each house. Simple yet substantial, these shaded outdoor spaces sport wood decking and standing-seam metal roofing painted to match the house color. They help foster a neighborly environment for the residents but also act as transition zones between each of the homes and the public garden.
Other amenities include a fitness center, laundry facility, medical and mental health services, and job and life skill training to help the members of this community reintegrate into society. The campus is the culmination of a public-private partnership between the Housing Authority of the County of Riverside and TruEvolution.
