Project Description
Rancho Cienega Sports Complex centers around the idea of recasting the sports complex as a botanical garden with places for sport embedded within it and maximizing the new facilities by building smartly and efficiently. Inspired by Piet Mondrion’s painting “broadway Boogie, the Sports Complex’s strength is it’s ability to provide uninterrupted use of the existing facilities while adding significant new assets and creating an integrated whole for the complex with the architecture and landscape being united through basic elements of scale, rhythm, color & texture.
Our community outreach efforts brought to the surface the need for larger facilities instead of just newer facilities. We leveraged the economies of pre-engineered steel structural system to go beyond the brief and provide a 30% larger pool and 2 full-size basketball courts (instead of 1) in the gym.
With the removal of the existing pool facility and gym and the overlay of a landscape strategy that embeds the sports complex in a botanical garden the park has been re-imagined as a hybrid space of activity and leisure with a strong civic identity.
