Project Description
Ransom Everglades School, one of the leading private schools in the country, is revolutionizing STEM education nationally through the design its new three-story, 45,000-square-foot Science, Technology, Engineering and Math building located on the high school campus in Coconut Grove. The Miami studio of global architecture firm Perkins+Will partnered with Ransom on the design which will showcase a new generation of project-based learning and multi-disciplinary education.
Principal and Design Director Pat Bosch, who served on a think tank for The White House and the Gates Foundation for STEM and STEAM expertise, is leading the project. The Miami office of Perkins+Will has performed innovative design services in this market since 1996, delivering some of the most creative and transformational solutions regionally and globally. The project will include indoor and outdoor collaboration areas to enhance team-based learning to promote an environment of thought leadership, experimentation and creativity. Laboratories for earth sciences, biology, chemistry and physics integrate with state-of-the-art fabrication and maker Labs. This incubator will be a center for faculty, administrators, students and visitors to exchange ideas, exhibit new trends in education, and will become a platform and living laboratory for the national dialogue on STEM education.
Concurrent to the architectural phases, landscape design services include the areas adjacent to the STEM building and the new quad as well as conceptual planning for traffic flow and drop-off zones. The STEM Building will face the school’s Visual Arts Building to create a new outdoor quad that symbolizes the school’s commitment to science, technology, engineering and math as well as a strong foundation in the humanities.
The facility will offer flexible classrooms with mobile walls and furniture, transparency, indoor/outdoor connectivity, a reconfigurable multi-purpose conference and auditorium space, a variety of informal learning spaces and classrooms that connect to a shared central area, tech-enabled educational tools, fabrication and maker labs, and a rooftop outdoor lab. It will be assisted in power by an entire roof of solar PVs and will implement resilience best practices.
Perkins+Will is excited to bring higher education’s best practices and latest educational ideals to the K-12 curriculum: the intersection of research and workplace, utilizing a new way of learning and teaching that is closer to how corporate America works today, teaching students how to enter into the modern workplace.
Ransom Everglades recently broke ground on the project in December of 2018, set to be the first completed project under Ransom’s newest school-wide master plan. Construction of the STEM building is scheduled for completion early 2020.
