Project Description
The award-winning architecture firm of Perkins+Will brings their design expertise to another South Florida school with the new Arts and Innovation Center for historic St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School in Coconut Grove.
Understanding the principles of STEAM education, St. Stephen’s envisioned a 20,000-square-foot center that allows for a multidisciplinary approach to education for both faculty and students.
This facility will be one of the leading examples of STEAM education in early childhood development and will showcase principles of flexibility and adaptability, multidisciplinary education, team-based learning and technology-enabled, project-based outcomes.
Perkins+Will Miami’s design embodies the latest in educational facilities, recognizing that next-generation education requires new kinds of buildings and learning environments. Careful attention has been given to creating spaces that provide learning experiences in all aspects of the project.
From the design of its systems to environmentally responsible strategies, including careful calibration of daylighting, acoustics, and technology, the building creates formal and informal learning environments that foster transparency, mobility and wellbeing.
The firm believes the way in which a building is designed is important to the fundamentals of learning and the education system, affecting the individual’s approach to learning. Perkins+Will’s Miami studio, who are highly recognized for their educational design globally from Saudi Arabia to Latin America, acknowledges this fact and takes pride in their expertise of creating innovative schools that welcome the future of learning.
Construction is set for completion in 2020.
