PROJECT: Suzhou Science & Technology City Hospital
TITLE: Ancient city, modern medicine
On the outskirts of Suzhou, a historic city along the east coast of China, a monumental new hospital serves a booming population.
Historic Suzhou is a unique city, known for its canals and courtyards. These traditional elements come to a modern medical facility in the bourgeoning district of Science & Technology City, just west of Suzhou. The hospital’s prominent site along a canal and its many landscaped courtyards connect the building to the city’s cultural heritage. Diagnostic and treatment spaces are centrally located within the complex so inpatients and outpatients have easy accessibility. Light-filled corridors are framed by functioning windows that let in the breeze, and allow lively shadows to play across the interior throughout the day.
