In a beach town where fiber-cement siding, backer board, and stucco reign, Drew Dennis, president of Pensacola-based Omega Construction and Design, wanted to try something different in residential design.
Pensacola has a rich cultural history and is influenced by architectural cues from Spain, Germany, and other European countries. This pocket of American history, however, is now on the threshold of a cultural rebirth after several decades of dormancy. With this revival happening in downtown Pensacola, a young couple moving to the area wanted to be in the center of it all—in a clean, modern home that could hold its value over time.
“When you compare the typical building materials used here to places like Dallas, Austin, Nashville, and Savannah, this is a great area to try something new,” Dennis says. “Most housing designs here are cottages or farmhouse-style, two-story homes. There are untapped opportunities to try more modern styles. Tamlyn XtremeTrim is a perfect example.”
As Dennis brought this 2,600-square-foot home to life on West Chase Street, it attracted lots of attention. With a mono-pitched roofline, a noticeably modern feel, and touches of industrial elements, the structure looked unlike anything else around it—while still complementing nearby homes.
To give the residence a unique aesthetic appeal, Tamlyn XtremeTrim profiles were used to trim the garage exterior. “The homeowners and I literally stood in the driveway and designed that portion of the façade based on what we thought would look best,” Dennis says.
Considering the humidity, rain, and termites that come along with living in a coastal Florida city, building material options can be limited. Made of extruded aluminum, XtremeTrim profiles offered a way to create modern architectural lines while still ensuring longevity, durability, and sustainability (the product is made from postindustrial and post-consumer scrap aluminum).
“As the project progressed, it got lots of good buzz, which is what I was hoping for,” Dennis says. His desire was to not only create a modern home for his clients, but also craft a real-life example of the design options that exist beyond current Pensacola design standards: proof that a modern-looking home doesn’t have to feel cold or look too industrial.
Since completion in 2018, Dennis says he has noticed a few other residences with a modern vibe popping up around Pensacola.
This home was his first experience with Tamlyn. Since then, he has used XtremeTrim on one other Pensacola residence—with plans to continue to include it in future home designs when possible. “I was impressed that Tamlyn delivered on their obligations,” he says. “They really believed in what I was trying to do: introduce something new to Pensacola from a visionary standpoint. I think we’re on the cusp of a design shift here.”
